A Sad Loss

We note with sadness the passing of old boy Nick Cotterill who was at the college in the 1960s. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

COTTERILL, Nick
(Nicholas Charles Jude):
6.5.1950 - 21.8.2020
Passed away peacefully in his sleep after a short illness at Riverside Lifecare. Loved son of the late Roland (Nick) and the late Josephine (Jo). Loved brother and brother-in-law of Richard (dec) and Takiri, and Julie (dec). Loved uncle of Rowan, Sarah, Ra, and Alba. Messages c/- Cotterill Family, 257 Devon Street East, New Plymouth 4312.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.

An Historical Event

Yesterday saw a piece of history made at FDMC with our Principal Martin Chamberlain announcing his intention to retire at the end of this year. It is historical because Mr. Chamberlain was the first lay Principal at FDMC and, along with Br Peter Bray, the longest-serving Principal in our 61 years.

His professional and genuine enthusiasm for our College will long be appreciated and remembered at FDMC and in the wider community. and we will have further reflections on his time at the College over the next few months.

A New Addition

It was once the College Chapel, then in the early 1980's it became our art room, and as of this week, we now know the space as the De La Salle Careers Centre. I am sure all old boys will agree it is quite the transformation and one that will get a lot of use into the future.

How Things Change

It is interesting how people's realities and expectations change over time. This junior dorm in the 1980s would have seemed like a luxury to those guys who boarded in the 1960s, while to today's boarders they would be extremely basic.

Cricket Stars in the Making

With the second half of the cricket season in full swing at the College, we thought this pic from the 1960s was quite topical. A very bright-eyed and keen group of young cricketers but we don't know their names. Leave a comment if you recognise Dad, Grand Dad or an old mate.

Removing and Alter

The old Chapel at the College became the new Art Room and is now in the process of turning into the even newer Careers Centre. This is quite an evocative image of the destruction of the original alter area when our first Chapel was converted back in 1981.

Br Dennis Loft

Picture
We have been visited this week by a real blast from the past, Br Dennis Loft. Br Dennis will be well remembered by students at the College in the mid 1970's. Since that time he has been serving in Papua New Guinea, South Sudan and more recently in Bethlehem.

Br Dennis is now living in the Brother's community in Bankstown, Sydney and remains as active an example of Lasallian service as he always was.

Old Boys Are Everywhere

You just never know when and where you might run into an FDMC Old Boy! Our old fella at large Peter Costello was holidaying on Niue recently when he got talking with a fellow tourist in Chris Scullin. Turns out Chris was an old boy from the early 1970's. Even when you are getting away from it all there is usually a college connection.

Farewell to The 1sts

All good things must come to an end and for our 1st XV that end was on Saturday against Wanganui Collegiate. Our guys went down by 26 to 12 in the semi final of the CNI competition and we wish Collegiate and past staff member Coach Steve Simpson all the best in their final against St Paul's Hamilton.

For 14 of our players this was their last game for the 1st XV. We thank them for representing us so well in the past and wish them well in their future sporting careers. We will be watching closely!
