The last couple of years has seen the growth of rowing as a sport at FDMC, largely due to the work and encouragement of staff member Lana Rowland Francis Douglas Memorial College rowers Corbin Porteous and Josh Fitzsimons came away with the Mighty River Power Junior Regatta Points Trophy held on Lake Karapiro last Saturday. The regatta is part of the build-up to the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships, also known as the Maadi Cup, being held on Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel from March 24th to 29th. Points were awarded for the top placings in events that schools then accumulated throughout the day. The total was divided by the number of rowers the school had entered. Fitzsimons placed first in his Under Seventeen single, third in his Under Eighteen single and Porteous first in his Under Eighteen single and together with Fitzsimons, third in their Under Eighteen Double Scull. Nine Hundred and eighty-three athletes from thirty-seven secondary schools competed in excellent conditions on the lake. Taranaki’s only other school to enter, Sacred Heart Girls College, came second on the points table.
