It does not seem like a year since Br Robert left us, but the this photo was taken in 1993, and that doesn't seem too long ago. Brother Robert McLaughlin’s death in Australia occurred a year ago this month. In New Zealand the country of his birth and where he was laid to rest the custom is to unveil and dedicate the headstone usually twelve months following the burial. Monday 12 November was the date selected for the ceremony recently. Three of Bob’s brothers were present with their wives and a nephew and niece. Several of the past and present staff of De La Salle College Mangere who had known him were present and were joined by special guests Brothers Mark McKeon and William Harnett. Colin Griffin Director of the resident community at Mangere presided at the unveiling and prayed a second blessing over the grave. The inscription was read by one of Bob’s brothers. During the meal that followed various tributes were given acknowledging the loss of one taken so suddenly and so young. Ambrose was present at Mainohana on Thursday of last week and able to attend the memorial Mass for Bob. The liturgy was highlighted by absolutely beautiful massed choir singing. At the conclusion of the Mass Ambrose spoke to the congregation recalling Bob’s faith in them, the manner in which he served them and the community that he built up at Mainohana.
