The Production Line Continues

Great news this week that two more of our old boys have taken a significant step on the professional rugby ladder. Both Scott Barrett (lock) and Teihorangi Walden (midfield) have been named in the NZ Under 20 rugby team to compete in the IRB Junior World Championship in France this June.

Scott is currently at university in Canterbury while Teihorangi is attending Otago Uni, so they are bright as well as athletic, which is of course an FDMC trait. It must also be noted that both players are also sons of FDMC old boys, although this might just be a coincidence!?

It is heartening to see that FDMC students continue to achieve at the highest level which is a testament to the effectiveness of a rugby programme that does not focus on "imported" players.

The Winter Season

The drought has broken and we are rapidly moving into the time of short days and long after school practices.

Most of the winter codes are under way, and although it is school holiday time there is no break for the teams when it comes to training and playing.

The 1st XV began their Hibernian Cup programme yesterday with a very good win over Viard College at the FDMC grounds. The 34 to 10 win was a good stepping stone to the games coming up and a positive bounce back after the close loss to De La Salle last week.

You can read a more detailed account of who did what to whom in this Daily News article.

What A Way To End A Term

Picture
For the first time in quite a few years the College Cross Country was held in Term 1. You can see from the photo the students appreciated the firm under foot conditions, and some of them even enjoyed the run.

Results were
  • Senior - Nick Tipler (LS)
  • Int. A  - Lachlan Stevens (S)
  • Int. B  - Ben Moore (L)
  • Junior - Sam Cleland (B
This was the last act of what has been a very busy term but we will all be back and ready for the next set of challenges in Term 2.

We Came, We Saw, We Lost

As mentioned yesterday, the annual clash between FDMC and De La Salle took place today on the playing fields of Mangere. Results did not go in our favour with the 1st XV losing by a score of 18 to 6 and the 2nds going down 22 to 12.

This is not an unprecedented result but we know the boys will be disappointed not to come away with a win or two. We also know they will have lots of stories to tell about their time with their Lasallian brothers up north.

Another Clash Of the Titans

The annual 1st and 2nd XV rugby matches between FDMC and De La Salle College take place tomorrow. It is our turn to travel North this year and the boys left with a mixture of excitement and a little bit of trepidation.

The games will take place at 10.30 and 12 tomorrow (Wed.) on the fields at De La Salle Mangere. The players would welcome any old boy support if you are in the area. For those who can't be there we will post the results as soon as we get them tomorrow.

The Rogues Gallery 2013

Picture
The staff circa 2013. For those of you who knew the college in the early days it is a bit mind boggling to see how many people it now takes to run the show.

Interview Time

Picture
The last two evenings have seen the first parent/teacher interviews of the year take place. As always there was a great turn out and a very positive feel to the whole event, although not all students may have been quite that positive.

It was good to see and catch up with so many old boys for whom the boot is now on the other foot. Several long serving staff members where heard to make statements like "well he is a lot better behaved in class than his father was."

A Great Day Had By All

Picture
Saturday dawned bright and cheerful, the set up frenzy was short and effective, the White Elephant crowd were in queue by 11am and the Gala Day got under way. There was a very good crowd who involved themselves in all the usual Gala delights and, the students worked hard when required and the parents were able to share some of their hard earned cash.

In the final wash up the College will be around $27 000 better off for the all the efforts made. Now we can sit back, debrief and start planning for the next one!

Gala Day!!

Picture
It is that time again - the FDMC Gala Day. Tomorrow sees the 2013 version of an annual tradition that brings the local community, and a few of their dollars, on to the college grounds.

The weather is looking promising and the hot dogs are all in readiness so if you are in town why not pop along and relive a little of your youth.

An Old Boy Visits

Picture
We had a visit today from old boy Michael Wills who has been back in NP for a week visiting family. Michael is currently DP at a Primary School in Ireland but tells us he is moving back to Perth in the near future with his wife and three children. Michael was a college product of the late 80's/early 90's and reckons he still has good links with a number of his mates from the old school days.

It is always good to see old boys and rest assured there is always a cup of tea to be had if you find yourself in the neighbourhood around morning tea time.
