A Bit Of Lip

Picture
While the winter months see a lot of sporting success at the college it is also a time for more cultural pursuits to shine as bright. The image above is of some our talkers in 1980 but we are still more than holding our own, with the Year 11 debating team overcoming the pride of NPBHS this week. The battle of words is set to become a more regular exchange as both schools look to gain more honours on the wider national stage.

Old Boy In Review

Picture
We received an interesting request this week from an Australian TV production company to film at FDMC. Seems they are doing a series on Aussie comedians and their early years and would like to film at FDMC. The series is  called Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery and will feature old boy Alan Brough in one of it's episodes.

We always welcome our old boys back, but those of you who were at school with Alan will understand that he is likely to say almost anything. No matter what his reflections on his upbringing and education might be, they are sure to be funny and at least a little off the wall.

A Bit Of A Fiddle

Picture
Last week saw the continuation of the long history of joint productions with Sacred Heart College. While Fiddler on the Roof was very much a SHGC production there was a significant contribution, on stage and in the orchestra pit,  a from FDMC students.

Tanaka Utete is pictured here playing the role of Tevye, done as always with his usual aplomb.

Also on the cultural front last week we had a number of college musicians take part in the Waikato Competitions. Our jazz band Fusion did very well gaining a Silver Award while a number of individual musicians also performed to a high standard.

Close, But No Cigar

Picture
The score board tells the sad truth, that the 1st XV's golden winter has come to an end. The boys went down swinging and with a little bit more luck and few more successful kicks at goal it could have still been a live season. They played well against a bigger team who were never able to dominate our guys.

It never feels good to lose but in a day or two the players will be able to reflect back on a great season and the fact that they did themselves, and all of us, proud.

The Next Big Hurdle

Tomorrow sees the big game between on our 1st XV and the pride of Wellington College. There has been a lot of interest in this game including an article in the Dominion Post (click here).

There has also been a lot of old boy interest, with the call going out for old boys in attendance to wear their old college jerseys and get in behind the boys. We hope to see you there and please note the kick off is at 11.30 at FDMC.

For those who can't make it we will endeavour to communicate the result asap, with may be a picture or two.

Staying In Touch

We have updated the most recent registrations today (to your right) and we include a few comments that have been left by old boys as they have registered with the Foundation. Why not register and leave a comment at the same time.
Awesome Hickford family ! Yes I agree that Smith and Barrett are fantastic current All Blacks, what a unique photo and idea. Good on you Josh. Lets not forget John Mitchell who was a past All Black who went to school with my brother Sam. These men are great role models to current students and everybody who has a connection to our very proud school.

Shane Bennett

Would like to contact some old friends and see how the college is progressing.

Great to be connected again. I left FDMC in 1973 near the end of form 4 and became a farm labourer. On 12 April 2013, after successful examination of my thesis, I was conferred with a PhD and on 29 August 2013, I formally graduate from the University of South Australia with it. I am now a Lecturer and Cyber Program Coordinator, at the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism, Macquarie University, Sydney. It is never to late to start learning.

Gidday, Realised it has been 10 years since our year graduated the College. Wondering if a reunion has been organised or if I'm too late?

Luke Herlihy

I was a former student at FDMC from 1978 thru 1984. I was House Captain of Loreto in 1984. I attended the University of Auckland from 1986-1990, and graduated with a Bachelor of Planning. I worked for the New Plymouth District Council from 1990-1994, then moved to Auckland to work for the Auckland Regional Council. I have lived and worked in Brisbane as a consultant since 2000.

Hot Off The Practice Field

The hooker looks OK but we are not sure about the props! Thanks to the All Black media management for this little FDMC gem.

An Apprentice Hooker

Picture
An interesting job title but one that old boy Liam Coltman can lay claim to having been the first to be asked to train with the All Blacks as part of their new scheme. You can read more about it here.

The bearded one has been building on his rugby reputation this season and we wish him well in his drive to be our next All Black. There is no doubt that selectors will have no problem

So Long To The Simmos

Picture
Today we say good bye to two long time servants of the College. Steve and Sjaane Simpson leave this weekend for the UK where they will be teaching in a different climate (in every respect).

Both joined the FDMC staff back in the 1990s and it is a measure of their energy and enthusiasm that the number of roles they have played are to many to list in this short post. Their goodwill and spirit will be missed by all but we hold out hope that they may return to our sunnier skies sometime in the future.

The Winter Season Continues

After yesterday's triumph today sees another chance for sporting glory in the College colours. Tonight at 6.30 pm our 1st XI football team take on NPBHS in a Taranaki Premier League game. The game is being played at Merrilands Domain under lights so get along and support if you are free.

We also note enthusiasm got the better of us yeasterday in that the 1st XV are now in the round of 16 not the last 8 as stated. Still it's only a matter of time eh?
