Noriac Goes Big!

Great front page article in today's Daily News on college band Noriac who have been named as one of the eight Rockquest finalists in Hamilton next month.

The four band members - Luke Bunn, Caleb Brbich, Fraser Walker, Ryuki Han - are all talented musicians and their band is just a little different as there is no vocalist. It is all about the music and none of us "oldies" can complain that we can't hear the lyrics!

Only Fraser walker is currently a Year 13 student so we can expect the guys to be making music at school for a year or two yet.

From an Old Boy's interest perspective Ryuki Han is the son of 1982 Head Boy Wilson Han - we can't remember whether Wilson showed a great deal of musical talent.

Back At The Old School

Picture
We had a visit today from renowned old boy Professor Michael Kelly who is pictured above with Principal Martin Chamberlain.

Michael had a tour of the school, speaking to several classes and he and his wife were able to have lunch with the Boarders.

Michael remains the Prince Phillip Professor of Technology at the University of Cambridge but is currently spending 8 months back in New Zealand.

It was great for senior students to meet the person who's name is on the science trophy they are striving to win.

In Hot Pursuit

Picture
All the best to our next Olympian as Nathan Smith prepares to hunt down the opposition in the Velodrome at the Paralympics. All that training and the competitive Smith spirit should make him a difficult opponent in the pursuit event.

Ben's Big Adventure

Picture
Well done to old boy Ben Sarten on winning the Arrival magazine 's big adventure competition.

Ben is going to be truly "out there" for 2 months as he samples all the NZ has to offer adventure wise. We are pretty sure he is up for it and up to it.

More details are available in the Daily News article from yesterday.

We couldn't resist this ad from the 1972 FDMC Magazine. The products sure have changed, the prices have a got a bit higher but the never/never terms seem to be pretty much the same.

You can still find Walshs selling the electrical good in town - just pop in to Mason Appliances and have a chat with Mike!

Where More Than Two Gather

Picture
Thanks to Will Rowland for the photos and brief report on last weekends old boys gathering in Wellington. The group photo is blurry to protect the guilty.

Sunday the 19th of August saw the annual Old Boys Reunion take place in Wellington.

Another fantastic occasion enjoyed by all. The occasion was topped off College Old Boy Michael Ryan - who attended in the 1970s (?)
Mr. Ryan shared and enjoyed many stories as he "popped in" for a few hours on his way home from Church.

Three From Three

Saturday saw 3 teams from FDMC competing in the TSSRFU Finals Day held at Tikorangi. In a great result for the College all three teams came away winners - the perfect end to a long season.

An interesting aside is that in all three finals the opposition was NPBHS, which always adds a an extra bit of spice to the competition.

Another Successful Old Boy

Picture
News this week that old boy Aaron Huesser has been awarded an important scholarship while studying for his Masters at Waikato University. Congratulations to Aaron on all the hard work he has done and good luck with all the work he is about to do.

The following is the press release from the University.

University of Waikato masters student Aaron Huesser has been awarded a prestigious scholarship, which will give him $5000 towards his study costs.

The Brian Perry Charitable Trust Graduate Scholarship in Science and Engineering was established by the Perry Foundation in 1999, with the first scholarship awarded in 2002. The scholarship is awarded annually to an applicant who demonstrates high academic calibre, coupled with leadership potential, involvement in team situations, sporting interests and community involvement. The scholarship will be officially awarded to Aaron at a presentation later this year.

Growing up in rural Taranaki, Aaron developed an appreciation and passion for the environment. Surrounded by natural energy producers he also gained an enthusiasm for the energy industry, which sparked his interest in the Earth sciences.

Aaron completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, followed by a Master of Science (MSc), which he is currently studying towards.

“Part of my thesis research will involve using industry-standard seismic reflection mapping tools to establish the structure and stratigraphy of sedimentary basin deposits in an area at the southern end of the Hikurangi Trough, east of Cook Straight,” says Aaron.

Following secondary school at Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth, he chose Waikato University due to the world-class facilities available for students and the exceptional teaching and research regime. He credits the numerous field trips as having been a highlight of his studies, with trips to Huriwai Valley to map stratigraphy and into the Taupo Volcanic Zone, including doing the Tongariro Crossing as part of a third-year Earth Sciences paper.

This is not the first award that Aaron has won. Most recently he was awarded the 2011 University of Waikato Shannon Young Award, for being the top overall third-year Earth Sciences student. He has also received the Energy Education Trust Undergraduate Scholarship (2011) and the Waikato Geological and Lapidary Club Prize in Earth and Ocean Sciences (2010).
