Approaching The Bar

Picture
Congratulations to Old Boy Tony Fiddis who was admitted to the Bar last week. Tony has won a lucrative scholarship to the University of Beijing/Peking to complete a Masters on Commercial and Industrial Chinese and European Law. Tony has always been quick with a word and we have no doubt he will cope well in the very big smoke!

Picking The Team

With the NPC Rugby season underway there has been a lot of discussion in the FDMC Staffroom over the best team that could be picked from our actively playing old boys. You can click on this survey link to have your say on who the best XV would be,

Clutch!

Yesterday saw the annual lunch time basketball battle between the Staff and Year 13. In a close encounter the older heads prevailed and came away the winners by 54 to 53. It was fitting that old boy and now youngest staff member Scotty Crocker stepped up to drain a three pointer in the dying seconds for the win. To the victor the spoils and the bragging rights!

From FDMC Lab to Massey University

Picture
We are very proud of our recent old boy Alton Gondipon, now a first year Agri-business student at Massey University, who has won a prestigious research summer internship grant from the Bio-Resource Processing Alliance to further develop his joint 2014 Taranaki Science Fair project.  Only eight undergraduate internship grants are awarded annually.  This summer, Alton is going to be conducting the research alongside a senior bioprocessing/chemical engineering student and world-leading researchers from Massey University and Fonterra Cooperative Group Ltd.

His project, investigating ways to add value to a current dairy waste stream, involves producing poultry and swine feedstock, is hoped to be beneficial to the Taranaki region by providing an industrial symbiosis solution to the growing dairy processing and poultry industries.  Alton hopes that the technology could be of export value to New Zealand and a catalyst for low cost poultry production globally, especially in developing countries.

A clear eyed bunch of go getters. Makes us wonder if they still have that ready smile and competitive spirit.

Look Who's Back!

Picture
After three years abroad Sjaane and Steve Simpson have returned to NZ and in less than a week both find themselves taking classes at FDMC. They have had a great time in the UK but are looking forward to what the future might hold back in NP.

Welcome home guys.

Foxy The Legend

Foxy The Legend. Not many people realise that our longest serving staff member at FDMC is Barbara (Foxy) Fox, who has been taking care of the boarders and Brothers since the early 1970's. Foxy is currently off work having had a fall earlier in the year but there is little doubt that she will be back serving our community in some capacity in the near future.
The pic  is of Foxy holding the Inter House Hostel Trophy that is named in her honour.

We would be interested in old boys reflections or stories about Barbara and her impact on FDMC.

August 09th, 2016

Picture
On Saturday, 13th August at Theatre Royal, the New Plymouth Orchestra and the Taranaki Youth Orchestra are presenting a concert featuring many students from our school. Four of the eight soloists are current FDMC students, so all the best to David Codd, Reuben Chan, Dominic Jacquemard and Daniel Chow. $10 gets you a great evening's musical entertainment so get along and enjoy.

Another Whistle Blower

Old Boy and past staff member Alastair Kalin is back in the country and settling back to Kiwi life after a few years of OE. He has taken up the whistle and recently acted as touch judge for our 1st XV game against St Bernards. We also hear he has been recognised as the most promising up and coming ref by the ref's association, so he may be off the touch line and in the middle of the action next year.
